A Reimagined Magazine of Impact
From the Nominator
Weill Cornell Medicine undertook a complete assessment and redesign of its flagship publication, Weill Cornell Medicine Magazine. With a new selected vendor, Skelton Sprouls, the magazine underwent a strategy development and redesign and was renamed "Impact." We modernized the presentation of information, after more than a decade of the same, traditional approach. We wanted a look and feel commensurate with a New York City academic medical center, one that would resonate with its highly educated, savvy audience of faculty, alumni, donors, and other stakeholders. Partnering with a new team with broad expertise in both design and editorial brought the magazine a fresh crop of writers and artists and the opportunity to rethink and expand how the institution could tell stories and engage its constituents. In contrast to Weill Cornell Medicine Magazine, which contained 10 departments with pieces ranging from institutional news, features and class notes, Impact boasts nine departments containing 22 subsections, spanning thought-leader opinions, patient-centered care stories, inspirational faculty portraits, and the latest clinical advances, as well as stories that heavily use art to fully capture our mission's breadth. Skelton Sprouls wisely advocated for leaning hard into illustration to get around limitations on photography on a cramped urban campus and to shorten story length to increase readability. The resulting Impact is colorful and dynamic, varied in its subject matter and, in our opinion, as sophisticated as New Yorkers.
From the Judges
The magazine drew us in with its striking illustrated covers. Inside, we found a variety of storytelling, from quick and engaging Q&As, infographics, and takes from experts, all accompanied by conceptual art and illustrations and lots of white space. The magazine articles were accessible and of interest to the lay reader, which is not always the case with medical school magazines. Very well done!
