Reimagining First Peoples' House
From the Nominator
First Peoples’ House (FPH) is a student service center for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) students at the University of Alberta (U of A). For more than 30 years, it has been the heart of the FNMI student community on campus. Its programming and resources aim to honor FNMI learners’ journeys by fostering better cultural, mental, emotional, physical, and financial wellness, so they can achieve academic and personal growth. But because FPH has not had adequate resources or space, it has never had the chance to serve all FNMI students. At present, FPH can only fit 50 people into its space—and the U of A has more than 1,800 FNMI students. The U of A has a plan to relocate and renovate FPH, significantly increasing its size, but more importantly, its capacity for expanded programming, staffing, and resources. Developing a case for support for this project has helped fundraisers and leadership communicate the need for this work so that supporters and potential donors understand the role they can play in bringing a reimagined FPH to life. To date, the campaign—launched in late 2023 with the case as its central fundraising material—has secured $3.08 million of its total $6 million goal. Renovations of the new space are underway, and a tentative grand opening has been slated for March 1, 2026.
From the Judges
This entry stood out for its compelling text, case studies, and images. We also liked its authenticity, the significant involvement of those who will be using the space, and the clear explanation of why donor gifts will benefit both First Nations people and for the community at large. A creative and effective workaround to not having blueprints or renderings readily available, with beautiful imagery and powerful stories. The inclusion of a campaign goal with tangible results already realized is noteworthy and something to be celebrated.
