Scholle McFarland's 'The Jaws Effect'
From the Nominator
Published in November 2023, our winter issue’s cover story, “Fear in the Water,” let readers ride along on a shark-catching research trip with faculty and students. The article explains these big fishes’ big PR problem and why it matters. The dramatic cover was a riff on the iconic "Jaws" movie poster. Scholle McFarland, editor of Oregon State's alumni magazine, used her column to recount how her own (irrational) fear of sharks came about, thanks to that legendary movie. Her big-fish tale is masterfully told with graphic detail (maraschino red Shirley Temples spewing from a five-year-old’s mouth!) and a healthy dose of humor.
From the Judges
The judging panel really enjoyed the good use of colorful, descriptive language (show, don't tell) throughout the piece. Additionally, the panel felt the piece relatable across audiences and provided a compelling intro to cover story.
