Terp magazine
From the Nominator
Terp magazine connects the University of Maryland community, celebrating its people and their impact through compelling and ambitious storytelling, arresting photography, thoughtful illustrations, and sophisticated, clean design. The magazine informs, inspires, and entertains, covering timely topics, including racial inequity, climate change, and national political strife through a UMD lens. In addition, the publication serves up fascinating profiles and fun takes on Terp life. These two issues showcase that balance. Outstanding design examples include the cover image of a student artwork of bullet casings forming the United States; an illustrated map of an alum’s D.C. food tour; and an appropriately scuzzy new portrait in the campus radio station for a 75-year retrospective. Exceptional articles include an unvarnished on-the-ground look at an opioid treatment program incorporating peer counselors/former addicts in underserved rural areas, as well as a sweet yet revealing story about a dozen Black female students who were all assigned in the early 1970s to one floor in a dorm and have reunited annually for 50 years. The magazine is mailed three times a year to 108,000 homes, and its content extends much further via a companion website, the university's daily news site, and its social media channels.
