UConn Magazine: The Moments That Made Sue Bird
From the Nominator
Sue Bird is one of the University of Connecticut's (UConn's) most beloved alumnae of all time. There is no one more unanimously considered Husky Royalty than this basketball superstar—so we needed to do something worthy on her retirement from the WNBA, something that would stand out in the mountains of press, be comprehensive, and feel very insider, even to the most rabid fan. It would take our entire freelance budget to hire a writer for something like this, so it had to be written in-house, conserving our freelance budget to purchase necessary stock images to supplement what we could get from Bird’s team, UConn archives, and WNBA media files. They’d have to be very specific photos to match “The Moments That Made Sue Bird,” in which we asked Bird to get personal and share the life moments, from childhood to now, that define her. The editor secured an hour-plus-long interview and was able to let Bird know ahead of time that we were looking for explanations and anecdotes she’d not shared previously.
