Wider Horizons
From the Nominator
The spring and fall 2023 issues of Wider Horizons were created with the leadership of art director and designer Dana Woodward and senior writer and editor Lisa Kozleski, working with collaborators across campus and around the community. The spring issue--"Yes, Chef"--is a celebration of food, which is fitting, as our college has been preparing chefs for rewarding careers for more than 50 years. Anchored by the profile of a talented alumna of three college programs (including one her grandfather founded), the issue is packed with inspiring but accessible recipes and food stories shared by our program grads. The fall issue--"The New Buffalo"--was more than a year in the making. Created with direction from three members of our Indigenous Services team, the issue was expanded to 64 pages and features people sharing stories of the buffalo. In addition to these special stories, both issues stand out for excellent storytelling, use of great images, and creative approaches to what could be less-interesting topics, and both reflect the diverse and inspiring people connected to Lethbridge College. All of this, accomplished with a small staff and budget, resulted in great feedback on our alumni survey and in messages from the community.
From the Judges
The magazine’s layout was effectively broken up by the use of varied font sizes and color blocks, which guided the reader’s gaze. The transition between themes was smoothly facilitated by the color changes in each section. The inclusion of full-page images balanced the extensive text, while smaller alumni photos provided focal points to advance the reader’s attention. A comprehensive portrayal of both students and alumni was achieved, offering insights into the student experience, pre- and post-graduation. Additionally, links and email addresses enabled readers to connect further with compelling narratives.
