Workshops With a Purpose: Transforming Survey Insights Into Actionable Ideas
From the Nominator
So often in the advancement, we hear about the need for data-based evidence and data-driven decisions. And there are plenty of industry examples of vast data being collected, how it’s being captured, and what changes it propels. Even when provided with incredibly compelling data, our advancement teams often do not have the bandwidth or tools to translate that data into ideas, decisions, or deliverables. We rarely see a solution that serves as a bridge from this data that everyone believes is essential to the informed decisions everyone desires. Recognizing these barriers, the Dartmouth Advancement Market Research team developed a mechanism to kickstart insights into action, facilitating two high-energy, interactive workshops of cross-advancement staff. Armed with a tailored pre-workshop reading of in-depth insights (from our alumni engagement survey), workshop invitees participated in exercises and technology-enabled discussions that elicited thoughtful contributions and innovative "blue-sky" ideas. The outcome: The groups generated and vetted nearly 30 ideas that could foster greater connections with alumni, including those alumni who have limited time for engagement. Our workshop series became the bridge allowing staff to collaborate across teams and transform data into meaningful action.
