CASE Europe Graduate Trainees 2023/24
Meet the current cohort for the CASE Europe Graduate Trainee Programme:
Scarlett O’Malley
As an undergraduate, I studied History and History of Art at the University of Edinburgh where I specialised in indigenous art and contemporary curatorial studies.
After graduating in 2021, I worked as a Learning Support Assistant at a Secondary School where I supported SEND children both in the classroom and through one-to-one interventions.
This was a very formative experience for me since it inspired me to undertake a masters in Social Policy and Social Research at UCL, so that I could conduct further research into many of the social problems I came across when working at the school.
For my masters thesis, I have partnered with a charity to conduct qualitative research that explores how asylum seekers' have experienced community relations whilst living in temporary accommodation. It has proved to be a very confronting yet worthwhile subject area, and one that I hope will have a positive impact on the lives of everyone involved in the project.
Art remains a keen interest of mine, I enjoy visiting galleries and creativity in general. Travelling and learning about other cultures is also a passion of mine and is something I hope to fit in throughout my career. I also enjoy team sports such as netball, and have recently started bouldering - so I
Morgane Lecomte
I graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science with a BSc in International Relations in 2023. I loved the breadth of topics IR allowed me to study and it is through my desire to explore certain aspects of international politics in more depth that I started volunteering.
I have mainly worked with organisations advocating for the agency and rights of women. For instance, I have regularly been involved with a political party in the UK fighting for this cause.
I also participated in a research project led by a charity in which we studied the experiences of women and girls in immigrant communities in South London. This year, I worked with a team as part of LSE’s Community Engagement Programme. We interviewed the volunteers of a sustainability-focused UN group to evaluate the advantages and pitfalls of student volunteerism. All these experiences have taught me the importance of fundraising, for non-profits in particular.
Outside of university and volunteering, I have been dancing for most of my life and am passionate about the performing arts in general. The skills I have developed through this, as well as during my degree and volunteering have been invaluable, and I am excited to learn more with CASE.
Chloe Barnard
My name is Chloe Barnard, and I am the incoming CASE Graduate Trainee at the University of Bath. I am about to graduate from the University of York with a first-class master’s degree in biology. During my 4 years at York, I had the opportunity to explore some fascinating topics as well as engage in many extracurriculars.
Throughout my degree, I was involved in the University’s bi-annual telethon fundraising campaign, during which I would call York Alumni and ask for donations to some fantastic causes at the university. This role really sparked my love for fundraising and was the reason I discovered the CASE graduate scheme!
In addition to this, I also volunteered my time during the pandemic to tutor students who were missing important school hours in the lead up to their exams because of national lockdowns. This was a very rewarding experience that only furthered my passion for philanthropy in education.
Outside of university and fundraising, I like to get active by playing badminton and going to the gym, as well as being creative by painting and baking in my spare time. I am looking forward to moving to the beautiful city of Bath and I am truly excited about becoming a CASE Intern to learn and develop my skills across many areas.
Rory McNeight
I graduated from the University of St Andrews in 2023 with a joint honours degree in Film Studies and International Relations.
During my studies I particularly enjoyed looking at why certain production choices are made in the media we engage with - whether labour practices, capital interests, international law or contemporary societal trends - and theorising new ways to approach the process.
Alongside this academic focus, I became increasingly involved with fundraising activities - and had a great time doing so! In my first year I became involved with the students’ union Charities Campaign, eventually working my way up to become the fundraising co-ordinator in my final year.
In this role I was able to I was able to use the experience I’d accrued in the previous years to aid the campaign’s own fundraising efforts - such as the annual hitchhiking race and fashion show - as well as supporting other student-run fundraisers across the student body. Outside term time I undertook internships with the St Andrews Development office where I trialled new methods of video-based stewardship, reported on their use of digital media engagement and generally assisted the team.
These internships were not only great fun, but further cement in my mind the impact that educational fundraising can have on peoples’ lives outside of the education it provides. As such, I’m looking forward to the CASE scheme for how it allows me to develop my skills and build on previous experience by becoming part of a team of people seeking to make a difference in the lives of students and researchers.
While at Cardiff I hope to make use of the Welsh countryside so as to continue
Grace Palfreman
I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2022 with a degree in German and Italian, and I spent the past year in Austria as an English language assistant.
Through my conversations with students about societal and global issues, I realised I wanted to explore working in a role that would create change in the world, which led me to CASE.
I’m especially interested in gender equality. During my time at university, I completed Women’s Aid Ask Me training, which taught me so much about the societal issue of domestic abuse and gave me the skills needed to run my own sessions at my college as an Ask Me ambassador.
I am particularly looking forward to learning about equality and diversity in higher education fundraising as part of my CASE training.
Outside of work and studies, I enjoy ballroom and Latin dancing, which I did competitively at university, and look forward to resuming in Manchester. I also love history and travel, so I am excited to explore an area of the country which I am less familiar with.
I am thrilled to have been given this opportunity, and I hope to use my year as a CASE graduate to learn about the sector, develop my interest in fundraising, and take on as many opportunities as possible along the way.
