We are delighted to welcome you to the CASE ‘Introduction to Fundraising and Alumni Relations 2020’ conference, the annual introductory course designed specifically for those new to fundraising, alumni relations and development services.

We hope you will enjoy learning about best practice in institutional advancement, hearing from our expert speakers and building your professional network.

We’ll kick off with the ‘Brilliant Basics’ to get you started – think of it as a Fundraising and Alumni Relations 101. Day two will then be digging deeper into best practice in the field, allowing you to explore further.

Take this programme as a springboard for the year ahead, getting you geared up for a full calendar of events.

10:30 - 11:30 Plenary Session 1 - Institutional Advancement 101

What does a successful advancement programme look like? How do we engage effectively with alumni and donors and what are the essential programmes and tools we need? In this introductory session, our conference co-chairs will present the nuts and bolts of alumni and donor engagement.

12:00 - 13:00 Plenary Session 2: Advancement Operations 101

Development Services? Advancement Services? Some form of Operations? The ‘Data Guys/Geeks’? Whatever you call your operational support team or person – and that’s if you have one - there is no denying work that falls under ‘advancement operations’ is fundamental to a successful alumni relations and fundraising programme.  This session will provide an overview of the responsibilities that fall under ‘advancement operations’… and in turn illustrate why as advancement professionals you need the ‘Data Guys/Geeks’ to be your best friends in the workplace.

1. What is Volunteering?

Volunteering with your alma mater is a relatively new notion in the grand scheme of things. During this session Grace will introduce you to the world of alumni volunteering and take you on a whistle-stop tour of volunteering and alumni relations at the University of Birmingham.  She’ll also share her top tips that you can use in your own institutions and programmes.  There’ll be plenty of time for questions so please come prepared and ask her anything

2. Overseas Fundraising 101

This session will look at the relevance for looking internationally for donors. It will address how to link with your institution’s international connections, and what you personally should think about as a global citizen. Bill will relate his own experience of fundraising in North America, mainland Europe, Russia, South-east Asia, Hong Kong and China. The session will include information and practical resources on specific countries/regions.

1. ‘If I knew then what I know now’ - practical tips for successful meetings and donor engagement

In this session, Jo and Richard will explore the ‘brilliant basics’ to help you get out the door and enjoy successful and enduring donor relationships. We will cover:

  • Managing your portfolio
  • The importance of insight to support successful portfolio management
  • Asking for meetings and preparation
  • Building rapport
  • Framing the ask
  • Following up

2. How do you think about Alumni Communications?

What does engagement mean for alumni? Doing it well be a win-win for both alumni and university. During this session Becky will explore opportunities to build your alumni engagement through communications. She will help you identify what your ultimate goals are and how to create a customer journey that leads towards them. Using your vision, your purpose and your resource, she will explain how a wide variety of engagement points tailored for your unique circumstances will enhance your programme.

How to Survive and Thrive in a Career in Development and Alumni Relations

The session will address the broad nature of the profession and the pitfalls to be wary of as well as the many highlights and advice on handling difficult (and unusual) situations - all of which come under the heading of “our job is weird”.

Bill will share his personal tips for success and offer advice about how to shoulder responsibility for your institution and make personal progress in the profession. Alongside the serious stuff, the session will try to make you appreciate the importance of what you do and the impact your role can have on your institution and society in general.

09:00 - 10:00 Plenary Session 4: Ethics in Advancement

An opportunity to explore advancement’s moral maze.  This session will walk you through the basics and also give the opportunity to consider some of the trickier situations you might face over the coming months and years.  At a time when our profession is under increased scrutiny Ethics in Advancement promises to be an interactive and thought provoking session.

1. Cultivation and Stewardship Strategies—the hallmarks of enduring philanthropy

In this workshop, Jo and Richard will explore cultivation and stewardship strategies that help a fundraiser strengthen and deepen relationships from prospect to donor in evolution.

11:30 - 12:30 Plenary Session 5: Career Hacks - Tools & Tips for Development & Alumni Relations Professionals

Over the session, Graeme will introduce attendees to a range of tips and tools for building a successful career in Development and Alumni Relations. He'll also give an insight into many of the challenges you might face in the sector and offer practical tools to help you overcome them.

1. You Can’t Innovate in a Vacuum (but you can Collaborate and Share Experience)

Innovation and continuous improvement are vital for Advancement, both in new and mature programmes. In this session Jo shares her experience of innovation (and evolution) - amongst other things you'll learn about different experiences of crowd funding, about staff giving and telephone fundraising.

2. Legacy giving: it’s not all about Death…

Leaving a gift in a Will is, for many, the culmination of a life’s work and the largest philanthropic gift they will ever make.  In this session, Karen and Richard will provide an overview of legacy fundraising, share the difference legacy gifts can make and give some practical tips to help you build activity in this area, and add value for your institution.

14:45 - 15:45 Plenary Session 6: Networking: It’s for Everyone!
Does the thought of entering a big room full of people fill you with dread? Or maybe you love to talk to new people? Joanne will use this session to take you through some do’s and don’ts for networking, helping you to develop your skills and aid your personal development.

The two days are an intensive insight and learning opportunity and we hope to use this last session as a way of summarising key messages and key learnings along with you. This is an opportunity to ensure we have covered everything you hoped for, bring to the fore and discuss key issues as well as time to focus with the Chairs and speakers on your careers.
Please do prepare questions for us and for your peers in the room over the two days. We hope that this last session is a vibrant discussion that sends you off enthused and excited about your profession.

  • At least two months before the conference start date, you will receive a full refund.
  • Between two months - three weeks before the conference start date, you will be refunded your registration fee less a 20% processing fee.
  • Less than three weeks before the conference start date, you will not receive a refund.
  • "No-shows" will not receive a refund.

100% Cancellation percentage: 1/01/20
