As an advancement leader, you either have a fundraising strategy that you are delivering or are in the process of developing a new one. Great. But can your strategy become even stronger when strategic thinking experts test your approach and draw your attention to the things that really matter?

In this pacy and interactive session, Helena and Steve offer a number of provocative and challenging strategic thinking questions to ask yourself (and others as appropriate), explore how you take individual and collective responsibility for strategy and leave you practical techniques to use in your organisation beyond this session.

Steve Hearsum and Helena Clayton are Organizational Change specialists. Working with for profit and non-profit organisations and the individuals within them, they help to transform approaches and achieve remarkable results.

For your advancement strategy to succeed in these tumultuous times, you need to develop the right approach to engage increasingly global audiences. Rather than sit in your silo and develop your strategy, Dr. Jean will share a case study on how the big thinking behind the strategy for the future of European universities developed. Drawing on her years of fundraising and alumni relations work, she will illustrate how aligning strategic thinking across your institution will yield dramatically better results particularly as we face our uncertain future with Brexit.

14:00 – 15:00 Leadership workshop: How does your personality shape Strategy, your delivery and your leadership style? Are you a Perfectionist, a Mediator, an Idealist or a Loyal Sceptic?

This session will present the benefits of Emotional Intelligence in you as a person and as a leader, with an introduction to The Enneagram.  You will identify your “type” and use this to develop aspects of your EQ. Touching on:

• Self-awareness and through that, self-management
• Develop awareness of others – and acceptance, understanding and empathy for different subjective worldviews
• Respecting and valuing others’ views is crucial to relationship management.

All these are critical to your excellent leadership and your high performing team.

15:20 - 16:05 Strategic Alliances: are you investing in the right internal relationships to support your advancement goals?

As the higher education sector faces increasing financial pressures, in many universities philanthropy is becoming an ever more vital income stream. In addition to enabling transformational projects that might not otherwise take place, in some institutions philanthropic support is also funding core activity. Given universities’ growing dependence on fundraised income, the Development function must build strong relationships with key internal stakeholders and the level of trust and mutual understanding between the Director of Development and Director of Finance can play a significant role in determining how effective a Development Department can become. 

In this session, Andrea, Jennie and Tim will draw on their expertise to share strategies for building effective relationships between Finance and Development and leave you equipped to lead your team and your institution through a period of growing reliance on philanthropic income.
