• Building Sustainable Employee Engagement

  Approximately six years ago, University of Florida Advancement implemented a transformational process called the Talent Review to enhance employee engagement. The Talent Review is a crucial conversation that serves three major purposes: engagement to drive retention, feedback to assist in organizational development initiatives, and development of individual career development plans. During this session, you will learn how to build sustainable efforts toward employee engagement, facilitate the conversation and increase overall employee engagement.
  
   
• Growing Our Own: A Model of Early Career Development Training

  Many higher education advancement offices are encountering challenges in recruiting and retaining high-quality development professionals. To solve this problem, the University of Minnesota hired associate development officers, an entry-level classification requiring minimal experience. To strengthen their development knowledge, and to prepare them to advance, the UM Foundation created and implemented the Early Career Development Program, designed to train and inspire new development professionals. Hear about our experience after two cohorts have gone through the program.

• Leadership Development as a Social Justice Strategy

  Are you leadership material? The answer depends in large part on your identities, in particular those related to gender and race. Biased models of leadership reinforce dynamics of power and oppression within our organizations, which is why we must make concerted efforts to develop leaders who do not fit the typical prototype. Explore the identity of a leader, learn what it takes for people from historically marginalized and minoritized identities to envision themselves as leaders, and take away practical tools that will help develop your own and others’ leadership capacity. During the session, you will walk through three “train the trainer” activities that you can take back to your organization. Research on the Advancement profession will be shared along with new practices in leadership development that are emerging from within the social justice community.
  
   
• Stewardship, Not Succession

  Succession planning has taken many forms over many decades, but always with two underlying assumptions: 1) that people will leave your organization, and 2) you must be prepared to fill the vacancy in a highly competitive, fast-moving talent market. Recruit, promote, retire, rinse and repeat. What if we treated donor prospects the way we treat our employees? What if we assumed that once someone invested in our institution, that their only options are to increase their giving or to leave? What if we failed to steward their contributions, neglected to recognize and appeal to their passions, decided to engage them with a “one size fits all” approach, or worse, if we spent 90% of our time focused on our least promising prospects? We see and do all of these things, and constantly fall into these traps when managing our teams. But what if we flip this scenario? In this interactive session, you will learn to maximize available tools and you will begin outlining a plan to apply them within the existing cadence and rhythm of your organization.

• How to Encourage a Culture of Well-Being and Resilience to Enhance Retention

  Advancement is tough work and burnout can lead to low employee motivation and morale, lack of cooperation and collaboration and, ultimately, high turnover. By creating a culture of support, positive work/life balance and an emphasis on the well-being of the team, advancement professionals can learn to weather even the most high-pressured campaign settings. Managers will learn how to help their team shift from burnout to resilience. Even when there are policies in place to support well-being and address burnout, it is critical that managers make an impact through modeling, encouragement and other team-supporting strategies. By attending this session, attendees will be able to: 1. Understand the impact stress has on their employees 2. Recognize the barriers to a healthy work culture 3. Identify ways to cultivate a positive work culture

• Microlearning for Advancement: Delivering Right Size Knowledge at the Right Time

  Microlearning as a strategy is becoming more recognized and offers a feasible solution to the problem of providing training to a group of learners who must always be on the go. Find out how to incorporate microlearning as a viable option to meet the "need to know now" learning needs of your staff. In this interactive session, you will find out how to capture learning into bite-size amounts, achieve results by focusing on learning outcomes, and build microlearning modules easily and cost effectively.

  We all know there is a strong correlation between great managers and high performing teams.  But how do we help our managers achieve “best boss ever” status? During this session, we’ll look at Caltech’s management development program which enhances each individual’s suite of managerial skills and focuses on creating an environment where team members are supported, motivated and set up to thrive. We’ll highlight the curriculum, review lessons learned and dig into exercises you can take back home.

• Maintaining Professional Relationships with Donors (in a #MeToo World)
  
  Speakers: Mauria Brough and Tracy Ketchem
  
  Relationships with donors are professional—but they often operate like a personal relationship, and that can lead to challenging and inappropriate situations. In this session, content will include critical skills for establishing and maintaining appropriate boundaries, a framework for assessing interactions with donors and potential donors, and best practices for building advancement professionals’ confidence in handling difficult and precarious situations (including gender and racial bias, political opposition, sexual harassment, and sexual misconduct). At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: - Distinguish the factors that make maintaining professional relationships with donors particularly challenging in development work. - Recognize three levels of unprofessional behavior that can occur in a relationship between a donor and development professional. - Identify best practices for building advancement professionals’ confidence in handling difficult and precarious situations.

• Employee Engagement: Measuring and Building Productivity

  In today’s world, we are all striving to do more with the same or even less in some cases. We need our employees to be more productive and engaged in their work. So how do we do that? During this session, we will focus on how a group of peer institutions worked together to utilize Gallup’s Employee Engagement Q12.  The process measured employee engagement with 12 simple questions and developed strategies to increase productivity across all departments and functions. You will learn about the tool itself, what engagement means and looks like in institutions and lessons learned from the last five years of this consortium.
  
   
• How Duke Employs Personalized Learning to Drive Professional Development

  With skill requirements changing at record speed, one-time reskilling and upskilling efforts will not be sufficient to deal with transformations in the long-term. Experts say the solution is to build a culture of lifelong learning that allows employees to continuously improve their competencies. Learn how to emulate Duke University Development’s experience to promote a culture of learning. We’ll share our journey that includes creating competency models and competency-based learning and implementing personalized learning technology that makes it all actionable. The result is Development staff who are motivated and empowered to own their professional development and career planning.
