Session 4: Engagement in China amidst the implementation NGO Laws; Due diligence on philanthropic partners

With the passage of the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Administration of Activities of Overseas Nongovernmental Organisations in the Mainland of China in January 2017, advancement professionals need to be aware of prohibited and permissible activities in China. These guidelines impact a range of activities, including group gatherings and solicitations in China. The interpretation of this law is still being developed, but the panel will offer their current interpretation of this law. The second part of this session will consider how organisations are during their homework on potential donors. Institutional risk and currency controls are important factors that will be discussed in this session.

Session 5: Discovery Work – Building Your International Donor Pipeline; Leveraging other campus offices active internationally

IAST Co-chairs

Spending time on discovery is key for developing and maintaining a robust pipeline of potential donors. However, discovery work can claim an outsized share of time and resources. Each one newly-identified prospect typically implies 8-10 others who have been qualified to be non-prospects. Are there ways to streamline this discovery activity and leverage the regional presence of other parts of our organisations, such as the career office, student programming, alumni clubs and other network resources? This session will focus on identifying new donors through both traditional and novel approaches.

• What are effective approaches in helping Chinese families understand how to support children's school?

Does your institution have a deep pool of alumni and parents to engage or do you feel that you need to connect with non-affiliated donors in order to round out your pool? Are non-affiliates interested in the research that is being done at your school or are they looking for an edge in admissions? This session will address some of the specific characteristics associated with working with non-affiliated donors.
