College they attended: Ohio University
Internship location: Georgia Institute of Technology I was a prospect research intern at Georgia Tech, and my primary responsibility was to prepare over 350 biographical profiles to be used by the Institute’s Director of Development for Parent Giving and Student Life. How did the CASE Advancement Internship prepare you to enter the advancement profession?
The CASE Advancement Internship prepared me for the advancement profession in a multitude of ways. Now, that I am a development officer, my time spent as a prospect research intern has become invaluable. I know what to look for in potential donors, and know what indicators signal that they may have high philanthropic capacity. The internship also came with several professional development sessions, which allowed me to get to know my peers across the country and learn from CASE's outstanding professional network. The Internship was almost a crash-course in advancement and pushed me to want to learn more about fundraising in higher education.
What advice would you give to a student interested in the CASE Advancement Internship?
My advice to a student interested in the CASE Advancement Internship would be to ask as many questions as you can. One of the best parts of my internship was that I had one on one meetings with colleagues across all aspects of advancement, from corporate and foundation relations to athletics to annual giving. These half-hour meetings allowed me to ask professionals about their work in a more casual environment. Hearing from development officers at both Georgia Tech (and then Ohio University for my time as a CASE Graduate Trainee) is what eventually pushed me to go all-in on being a frontline fundraiser.
What's your favorite tradition at your institution?
In my opinion, we have the best marching band in the country. My favorite tradition at OHIO is when alumni of the Marching 110 return to campus at Homecoming. The band easily doubles or triples in size, and our alumni still know every note and piece of choreography. It gives me goosebumps every year.

How did the CASE Advancement Internship prepare you to enter the advancement profession?
My CASE Internship provided me an interdisciplinary experience in marketing, fundraising, project management, and more, which helped me realize where my talents lie. One of my biggest takeaways is that everyone ends up in advancement through very different paths. No matter your background, your unique lived experience can prove to be helpful and help shape the culture of your work and greater institution. All of this helped pave the path to my current career at Berkeley.
What advice would you give to a student interested in the CASE Advancement Internship?
1. Keep an open-mind: I never saw myself going into advancement (let alone knew it was a career path), but I kept an open-mind while applying and now I have a career. 2. Be Curious: Try to say "yes" when you're faced with new challenges or areas of work you aren't familiar with. Learn about what people do, even if you think you would never do it. You never know! 3. Advocate for yourself: Tell your supervisors what you want to work on, and what you want to develop in yourself. They won't know unless you tell them. Something to keep in mind for your whole career - "closed mouths don't get fed."

I owe it to the CASE Advancement Internship for launching my career in the Advancement profession. I use the skills I learned during my time as an intern on a daily basis and it has helped me make a larger impact in my role.
What advice would you give to a student interested in the CASE Advancement Internship?
If you're considering the CASE Advancement Internship, do it! I would also recommend interning at an institution other than the one that you currently attend as a student. Since I attended a small, private liberal arts college, I knew that I wanted to gain experience at a large, public research university. The insight that I gained was invaluable.
What's the most exciting project, event, or activity that you've been a part of to date?
The Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering is embarking on a comprehensive campaign, which includes securing capital project funding for the school's new home. It was exciting to work collaboratively with other teams in Georgia Tech Development and celebrate the groundbreaking of the school's new building and recognize the donors who made it possible. It was rewarding to see the impact of the resources I helped secure on behalf of the school.

The ability to read minds! I am fascinated by the psychology of philanthropy and continuously feel so inspired by the generosity of the donors I work with.

How did the CASE Advancement Internship prepare you to enter the advancement profession?
The CASE Advancement Internship has solidified my love and respect for the nonprofit sector and was a stepping-stone in my overall interest in learning more about fundraising. After this internship, I enrolled in 2 classes at my graduate institution, Fundraising for Non-Profit Organizations and Effective Nonprofit Management, and I loved both of them! Eight weeks was simply not enough for the position I'm in now, but it did make me more aware that, although not spoken about enough, that fundraising is a truly rewarding job.
What advice would you give to a student interested in the CASE Advancement Internship?
Apply! Even if you don't see yourself working in fundraising or advancement, take a chance on yourself to write the pages of your story. Don't let others' opinions or assumptions on nonprofit work influence your decision to apply. You may surprise yourself in the process (I know I did), so be open to nonprofit work in your future.
What's your favorite tradition at your institution?
My favorite tradition so far at Mercy Tech happens during Orientation Week. Since 2020, Mercy Tech has organized caravan trips to deliver welcome swag bags to the new freshmen before the school year. We were assigned neighborhoods in Philadelphia to travel, meet our students and their guardians, and give them a welcome gift. We got so many messages of appreciation from parents who were grateful that we wanted to know their child(ren) not just as students, but as people. Additionally, the experience made us more conscious of some of the sacrifices our families are going through to get to school each day. We knew that most of them came from low-income backgrounds, but learning about some of the other obstacles they face such as senseless violence, possible domestic issues, and transportation made us even more grateful that they chose Mercy Tech.
What's the most interesting place you've been to for a donor visit, alumni event, or other work activity?
While at Drexel, I went on a donor visit with a somewhat recent alum. He was an entrepreneur in the wine industry and came out from California to initially do business, but also visit his alma mater. He had not visited Drexel since he graduated over 10 years ago, so when he saw the campus during his visit, he was amazed. To say he was elated to see the new additions/developments on campus is a serious understatement. For context, he graduated with a business degree in the LeBow College of Business and was heavily involved in squash. We all spent the morning getting exclusive tours of the new Arlen Specter US Squash Center, the Baiada Institute for Entrepreneurship, and LeBow. After the tours, he was interested in possibly becoming a mentor or speaker for young college students interested in creating start-ups. That was by far my favorite day of my internship because to see how his face lit up when he returned to campus after seeing so much construction when he graduated made the visit worthwhile. I could see how much love and pride he had to be a Drexel Dragon, and I can only hope that he took advantage of the opportunities to showcase his pride as a current alum to future ones!

My career began in the donor relations space meaning I had the great fortune to steward donors and help them understand the impact of their generosity. I took on a project of leading the creation of stewardship books that chronicled donors giving to the institution. They were quite beautiful pieces that were very personal. After one donor received their book, they made an unplanned six figure gift to the University.
