When the University of Sydney called on its alumni to become “citizen scientists,” the response did not disappoint.

Alumni were invited to document sightings of scarab beetles (genus Anoplognathus), fondly known as Christmas beetles because, historically, they appeared in swarms during Australia’s warm summer months of December and January. The appearance of the brightly colored or iridescent insects became a sign of the holiday season.
