What impact can social media have for higher education?
Social media offers the first impression that a lot of students have of an institution, so it’s important that it shows the overall culture of an organization and what students can expect from a student life perspective—it should be fun and inviting.
What do you view as digital accessibility best practices?
It’s all about making sure that your content can be accessed by everyone. Our audience is broad and diverse—and some individuals are disabled—and we need to make sure that our content is accessible. That means making sure that images have alt text [which describes the appearance or function of an image on a page], videos are captioned, and your written content is clear and concise so that technology like screen readers and text-to-speech programs can access it. It’s upsetting when you have content that’s telling this great story about your institution and how someone can become part of that institution, but it’s not accessible. There’s a lot of basic and easy things you can do to make accessible content.
