In the latest issue of Currents, the University at Buffalo is featured in “When Advancement Meets Academia.” In this web extra, we add one more voice from that institution.
Rose Hu is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Accounting and Law in the School of Management at the University at Buffalo, New York, U.S. She works closely with Jeff Piscitelli, Executive Director of Advancement for the School of Management, who calls her “a rock star when it comes to stewardship.” With that accolade in mind, Currents asked for her perspective on a few topics related to her role in philanthropy.
Background
I am a Certified Public Accountant and was a senior audit manager in a “Big 4” [the largest global accounting companies] accounting firm when the teaching bug bit me. I spent several years instructing national training courses and developing firm-wide training programs and then moved into academia at my alma mater. I’ve come full circle, bringing my role in public accounting into the classroom. I love helping build the next generation of CPAs.
Her Role in Philanthropy
When I was a new faculty member, I was put in charge of the scholarship committee for the Department of Accounting and Law. We are very lucky to have great benefactors who support scholarships and fellowships, and I was the point of contact for collecting the student applications. My job was to lead the committee in determining the “right fit,” matching students to fellowship criteria per donors’ wishes. My role has since changed, but as Director of our M.S. in Accounting program, I have the pleasure of still serving on this committee, and work diligently to invest in relationships with donors and students to continue to steward our donors’ gifts well.
