CASE’s presidents and their key priorities
1974–1978 Alice Beeman
- Directed CASE’s first conferences, including the Annual Assembly and Summer Institutes.
- Established the 16 “We Will” commitments to guide the unification of CASE’s two predecessor associations, The American Alumni Council and The American College Public Relations Association.
- Debuted Currents magazine and published CASE’s first book, The Changing World of College Relations: History and Philosophy 1917-1975.
1978–1986 James L. Fisher
- Convened the seminal Greenbrier Colloquium on Professionalism in Institutional Advancement.
- Partnered with the National Association of College and University Business Officers to develop the first benchmarking tool for advancement, Management and Reporting Standards for Educational Institutions: Fund Raising and Related Activities.
- Built partnerships with 11 associations to create the Action Committee for Higher Education in 1982.
1986–1990 Gary H. Quehl
- Traveled 50,000 miles in his first year as president to talk with 600 leaders on 26 U.S. campuses.
- Strengthened and expanded CASE’s services for advancement professionals and furthered various CASE initiatives to shift public confidence in higher education.
- Convened an advisory committee to examine CASE’s professional training curricula.
1990 Virginia Carter Smith (interim)
1991–1997 Peter McE. Buchanan
- Addressed key horizon issues for CASE to become a more international organization, notably focusing on technology.
- Established CASE’s international presence by opening CASE’s London office. Launched CASE’s first website.
- Led governance model shift to one with at-large trustees versus trustees representing specific constituencies and the creation of CASE’s three professional Commissions.
1997–2000 Eustace D. Theodore
- Expanded CASE’s diversity efforts while strengthening relationships with the alumni relations community.
- Emphasized smooth, productive, and well-administered events.
- Launched the International Journal of Educational Advancement.
2000 Charles Lee (interim)
2001–2003 Vance T. Peterson
- Championed the adoption of the CASE Management Reporting Standards to make them “common practice.”
- Continued CASE’s international expansion.
- Emphasized the importance of diversifying the profession and CASE staff.
2004–2015 John Lippincott
- Expanded CASE’s international footprint, including opening offices in Singapore and Mexico City and launching programs in Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
- Focused on key priorities of diversity, international growth, research, and technology.
- Grew CASE’s offerings for professionals at all career stages, including the Summit for Leaders in Advancement and the Minority Advancement Institute.
2015–present Sue Cunningham
- Deepened global connectivity through a governance restructure with one global Board, Regional Councils, and District Cabinets. Launched CASE Laureates, celebrating CASE’s tradition of volunteerism.
- Developed CASE Competencies Model; acquired the VSE; published the Global Reporting Standards; and expanded research with CASE Insights.
- Extended DEIB commitment through the launch of the OIC, the introduction of the Zero Tolerance Pledge, Statement on Inclusion, and Inclusion Index.
