This research brief highlights key findings from data collected from the Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) survey for the 2020-21 fiscal year for U.S. higher education institutions. Full summary findings will be released in April 2022.

With 60 years of data, the VSE survey has been the premier source of information on philanthropic giving to education in the United States.

Based on responses to the annual Voluntary Support of Education survey, CASE estimates that colleges and universities in the U.S. raised $49.60 billion during the 2019 academic fiscal year, 6.1% more than in 2018 and the highest amount ever raised.

Based on responses to the annual VSE survey, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) estimates that alumni contributed $12.15 billion to their alma maters in 2018. That is 26 percent of all support received in that fiscal year.

Based on responses to the annual Voluntary Support of Education survey, CASE estimates that colleges and universities in the U.S. raised $49.50 billion during the 2020 academic fiscal year, a slight decline from the $49.60 billion raised the year before.
