About the entry
The point of longest duration for the total solar eclipse on August, 21, 2017—the first over the United States since 1979—was just south of Carbondale, Illinois. The path of a second eclipse in 2024 will also cross over the region, providing a unique opportunity for scientists and the public alike to experience a total eclipse twice from the same spot.
From the Judges' Report
Very creative events! A good incorporation of using a natural planetary wonder to advance the mission of the university. Good planning (2 years in advance), excellent use of resources, and a great way to include the surrounding community and not just the campus community. Very well done, and very innovative.
