Ohio State Alumni Magazine
From the Nominator
"The editorial content of Ohio State Alumni Magazine works hand-in-hand with visuals and design to encourage graduates to sustain lifelong connections with one another and their university. The fall 2020 and winter 2021 magazines demonstrate this well and illustrate the breadth of topics and people we work to represent in each issue. Subsequent letters and online comments from readers demonstrated we hit the mark.
In fall 2020, we confronted our country’s racial injustices, which had reached a boiling point with the killing of George Floyd. In response, we introduced readers to faculty and alumni experts working to study and change the problems in our society. We continued to chronicle how Ohio State was responding to the COVID-19 pandemic as the university welcomed students back to campus after moving to virtual classes and work-from-home situations the previous spring. In the midst of these two crises, we introduced a new university president to the Ohio State community.
In our winter 2021 issue, we celebrated two of Ohio State’s most renowned researchers—climate scientists and alumni Lonnie Thompson and Ellen Mosley-Thompson. We took readers on an adventure as we showed how the Thompsons collected ice cores from the tallest peaks in the tropics, as well in Antarctica and Greenland. To give readers ample variety, we profiled a young alumni social media star who chronicles her house restoration on TikTok while working to build neighborhoods that benefit businesses and people from all walks of life."
From the Judges
Fonts, subheads, and big pull quotes really give your eyes a lot of places to effortlessly land. Outstanding design, maybe the gold standard. Great cover portrait and features.
