Opening Remarks

Sue Cunningham, President and CEO, Council for Advancement and Support of Education

10:25 a.m. – 11:25 a.m.

Opening Plenary: Cultural Intelligence: Why Advancement Needs It

David Livermore, Ph.D., President, Cultural Intelligence Center

As our institutions serve a growing diversity of students who will go on to study, live, and work all over the world, cultural intelligence (CQ) is essential. Many approaches for working across cultures are ill-suited to the 21st century world but CQ offers a better way. Rather than teaching outdated stereotypes, CQ provides strategies that can be applied to any situation.

In this plenary session, David Livermore, one of the leading experts on cultural intelligence, will inspire us to prioritise CQ, share how leading organisations like Harvard, Tencent, and BMW are using CQ, and describe why it’s uniquely suited to advancement professionals working in Asia-Pacific and beyond.

11:35 a.m. – 12:35 p.m.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

Challenging the Idea of “Good Fit”

Associate Professor Eeqbal Hassim, Education Consultant and Honorary Principal Fellow, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, The University of Melbourne

Erin Robinson, Ph.D., Middle School Principal and College DEI Lead, UWC South East Asia

We often hear the phrase “good fit” used to determine whether someone belongs in our organisation. It is so commonplace that we don’t stop to think about the hidden biases and assumptions about compatibility that arise when using this to determine belonging. In order to move towards a truly inclusive and adaptable organisational culture, we must understand what “fit” means within the contexts of social sustainability and intercultural development. In this session, we will explore intercultural competence and how you might use an intercultural development continuum to tackle issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will also share tips on how to get started in your schools and universities.

Leadership:

ALCHEMIZE - Accountability in an Age of Self Leadership

Katrina Webb OAM, Founder + Director, Newday Leadership

Ideas have been circulating about the gig economy and remote working for the last few years, but no one could have anticipated the impact of COVID-19 in disrupting how and where we work. Working virtually also poses new challenges. In an age of rapid change, how do we alchemize performance working with an entirely new set of rules?

In this presentation, participants are taken through a three-phase process enabling them to audit priority management, energy management, and mind management. Katrina provides insights and necessary tools that she has developed in her career as both an athlete and a corporate performance + well-being coach.

Takeaways include: maintaining focus; setting healthy boundaries; and mastering the art of self-leadership for the greater good of others.

DEI Through a Different Lens

Jimmy Buck, Chief Advancement Officer, Deakin University

Jocelyn Kelty, Director, Richmond Associates, Australia Office

Raziq Qasimi, Litigation Support Officer, Legal Aid Queensland

Moderated by: Rob Henry, Vice President of Education, Council for Advancement and Support of Education

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are critical pillars of our work and our lives in general. Seeing through different lenses, the speakers will share and discuss the meaning of DEI to them and why it matters. The panel will explore how we can learn from individual experiences and take action as we reflect on DEI through our own lens.

Leadership:

TOMORROW'S GOLD - Leading into Uncertain Futures

Katrina Webb OAM, Founder + Director, Newday Leadership

The world has changed, and what looked like success yesterday has also undergone a rapid transformation. As a leader, we must adapt and evolve in a brand-new world where the focus is shifting from shareholders to stakeholders, from capitalism to community, and from profit to purpose. You may have stood on the winning podium yesterday, but what got you there yesterday will not win you a gold medal tomorrow. The games have changed, and the rules are revolutionary.

In Tomorrow's Gold, Katrina unlocks key trends that are redefining leadership in the 21st century, in addition to providing a blueprint for navigating high performance as a leader in unchartered territory. Adaptability, resilience, empathy, and diversity are converging to create a new kind of alchemy - one where community, compassion, and collaboration are creating a new currency.

On-Demand Sessions (Pre-Recorded):

Experienced Practitioners/Mid-Career:

Candid Conversation: A Practical Guide to Difficult Discussions

Dina Abulfotuh, Vice President for Marketing Communication and Public Affairs, The American University in Cairo

As a leader and manager, one of your most crucial skills is the ability to clearly, compassionately, and effectively manage tough conversations, a key part of professional relationships. In times of uncertainty or transformation like that brought on by the pandemic, difficult discussions are increasingly necessary with colleagues and team members (maybe even supervisors). This session will provide a step-by-step guide and useful tips on how to prepare, lead, and follow up on those critical conversations.

Managing Complexities in the Next Advancement Normal

Antonia Yeung, Associate Vice-President (Development and Campus Services), The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong

Amid unprecedented uncertainties that have turned the world upside down, to say the least, how may we as institutional advancement contributors approach the new landscape and make life work for the organisation, the team, and ourselves? When planning for the unknown is not necessarily an effective option, how may we flex our muscles (and mindset) to reinvent a more relevant and robust mode of operation in anticipation of the next normal?

This sharing will draw on the speaker’s most recent experience navigating the complexities in (and substantial impact to) higher education brought about by extensive social movements and the pandemic in Hong Kong. We shall explore (1) ways to re-define what matters; (2) how to find motivation in disappointment; and (3) means to re-prioritise “well-being” for a sustainable business future.

Newcomers/Early Career:

Building Relationships: Navigating, Networking, and Nurturing

Jimmy Buck, Chief Advancement Officer, Deakin University

As advancement practitioners, our work is all about people - from the alumni who represent our institutions, to the donors changing lives, to the researchers breaking barriers. Relationships are also important for our individual career development, and this session looks at how we can make sure we build and manage our relationship networks.

Navigating Your Advancement Career: Straight as an Arrow or Twists and Turns?

Sinéad Collins, Director of Engagement and External Relations, UWC South East Asia

Focussed on lessons learnt and advice for those starting out and those with a few years of experience, join this session if you are seeking insights into the world of advancement and would like the opportunity to reflect on where you have come from, where you are now and where you might be headed next.

10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor / President, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Moderated by: Sue Cunningham, President and CEO, Council for Advancement and Support of Education

How are leaders of educational institutions strategically leading change in a dynamic environment for their institutions? What leadership competencies do they rely on in this context? What does the future look like for educational advancement in an ever-changing environment for their institutions? How can advancement leaders best partner with their institution’s chief executive to champion their institutions during such an unusual time? CASE President and CEO Sue Cunningham will host a conversation with a distinguished panel of university presidents and vice-chancellors to explore these questions and how they are leading.

11:10 a.m. – 12:10 p.m.

Alumni Relations:

Supercharging Student Transition and Employability: Unlocking the Potential of Authentic Partnership to Transform the Student and Alumni Experience

Professor Jessica Vanderlelie, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students), La Trobe University

The changing industrial landscape poses a challenge and an opportunity for universities as we prepare students for the world of work. Much work has taken place across the sector to support student transition and employability. However, we have yet to realise the full potential of our alumni in the student experience, employability, and transforming how we teach.

Through the work of Australian Learning and Teaching Fellowship, we are one step closer to having the tools we need to reset our operating paradigm and maintain authentic engagement with our alumni to support student and graduate outcomes. This session will explore approaches to develop strong alumni communities that draw upon the strength of the student experience, and explore a framework for the integration of alumni perspectives into the curriculum to support student employability and successful transition.

Reputation Futurology

Tere McGonagle-Daly, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Students and Global Engagement, Massey University

Louise Simpson, Managing Director, The Knowledge Partnership

Where do you think higher education will be six months from now, in terms of online? What is the most pressing problem for your university in the light of COVID-19? Where will your university be in 5 years' time?

Tune in to hear Tere and Louise discuss the responses to a survey on rebuilding reputation post-COVID-19 and compare the global fallout to university reputation during the pandemic.

Schools:

COVID-19: How It Has Changed the Game

Yasmeen Ashraf, Communication and Community Development Manager, King George V School

Kate Birrell, Alumni and Community Manager, Brighton Grammar School

Shakila Samuel, Alumni Manager, Tanglin Trust School

Previously, the optimum way to engage alumni and enable them to connect with their peers was through in-person events. What happens when this is no longer possible for many months and possibly years?

We hear from three schools that got inventive in their efforts to create cross-border connections and new networks. Typically, schools go out to their alumni hotspots in major global cities, organising social gatherings to bring former students together to reminisce and foster old and new connections. With these touchpoints no longer available to school alumni teams, we hear how they are replicating those experiences, generating the barrier-breaking effects of social events via other mediums, and avoiding school connections falling to the bottom of a long list of lost connections.

1:35 p.m. – 2:35 p.m.

Advancement Services:

Worth It? How To Build a Service Culture in Your Advancement Services Team

Rachael Dalton, Deputy Director, Operations, Advancement, The University of Melbourne

Alex Zadoyanov, Head of Advancement Business Operations, The University of Melbourne

Does your advancement services team struggle to get on the same page as their front-line colleagues?

Does your advancement team feel overwhelmed by the number and complexity of competing requests?

Do you experience a high turnover of advancement services staff?

In an environment where fundraisers, donors, and alumni relations professionals expect seamless and hassle-free technical support and customer experience from advancement services, it becomes necessary to recognise different ways of working and to know what a good service culture looks like.

Drawing on their experience in developing strong service cultures before joining advancement, the presenters will share their success stories of implementing revamped practices that raised the profile of advancement services and enhanced relationships.

Alumni Relations:

The Good, the Bad and the Positively Engaging – Alumni in a Digital World

Joanne Nyland, Deputy Director, Advancement and Head of Alumni Relations, Griffith University

Lea Sublett, Manager of Alumni Affairs, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

2020 sent us hurtling into a world of digital engagement many of us already wanted to be part of - be careful what you wish for!

Although most of us embraced this new adventure, by the end of 2020, alumni and supporters were suffering digital fatigue, and while digital engagement brought numerous benefits, we may have found this more complex than we could have predicted.

In this discussion, we’ll compare the experiences of two leaders, two universities, and two global alumni programmes – Griffith University in Australia and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. We’ll speak about experiences in 2020, successes and learnings, and consider what’s next for alumni engagement.

On-Demand Sessions (Pre-Recorded):

- Cultivate FASS-alumni relations by engaging alumni as worthy role models to students

- Create a platform for alumni contribution to the development of FASS

- Facilitate students’ personal, career, and leadership development

The panel will bring important perspectives from mentors and organisers on how the current pandemic has affected the programme in different ways, as well as how mentors and mentees can work together to achieve a fulfilling mentorship experience in the “new normal”.

Engagement Amid the Pandemic: One Thousand and One Stories About Data!

Rami Abi Jomaa, Chief Advancement Officer, King's Academy

Soha Hmaidan, Associate Vice President for Advancement Services and University Events, American University of Beirut

The pandemic has changed how advancement offices operate. In pre-pandemic days, the advancement world, which is all about relationships and engagement, has adopted data-driven approaches as the core of its operations. However, with the dominance of virtual life, digital world, and physical distancing, the reliance on data became even more strategic, if not decisive, to an institution’s continuity and sustainability.

Soha and Rami will describe how two different educational models have worked on engaging their constituents during the pandemic, focussing on data in order to drive annual and major giving, stewardship, and alumni relations. These two models bring the higher education model (AUB) and the private boarding school model (King’s Academy), in an all-encompassing approach to data, engagement, and privacy.

Elizabeth Deely, Associate Director, Strategy and Project Management, University of Florida

Audrey Geoffroy, Senior Director, Data Services, University of Florida

Heather Greig, Assistant Vice President, Strategy and Operations, University of Florida

To this end, UF launched Data Management–a comprehensive approach to project management, documentation, and data quality. Comprised of six implementation teams and a steering committee, the Data Management infrastructure ensures that all projects have a defined scope, established roles and responsibilities, and rules of engagement to drive outcomes. This structure also provides the framework for broader data governance across UF advancement.

Demystifying Marketing Data Science

Jon Thompson, Executive Director of Philanthropic Technology & Analytics, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

This is a bonus content from the CASE Drive/Cast 2020.

Data scientists can mine massive amounts of information to better understand human behaviour. So how can marketing teams use the principles of "big data" to drive greater return on investment (ROI)? Children's National has created an analytics programme to understand how marketing and fundraising touchpoints work together so that they are worth more in coordination then the sum of their parts. This modelling led to a decrease from 83 cents to 7 cents of the cost per dollar raised in a single fiscal year by focussing on moments and touchpoints that matter. This session will cover the theoretical concepts to the actual building of the product, as well as the multi-year road map of where Children's National is taking this technology.

Feel the Churn! How to Implement Prospect Ageing and Accelerate Pipeline Movement

Catherine Flaatten, Director, Research and Relationship Management, The George Washington University

Lindsey Nadeau, Senior Director, Prospect Development, UNICEF USA

This is a bonus content from the CASE Drive/Cast 2020.

In recognition of the need for more consistent driving of and reporting on prospect movement through the pipeline, our prospect development team at The George Washington University developed definitions of and guidelines around key proxy measures to form the concept of “prospect ageing.” Together, the combination of these variables provides a holistic picture of the pipeline progress a gift officer's assigned prospects are making, as viewed through the parallel lenses of stage ageing and portfolio saturation. This session will describe the process of developing this concept, dive into sample micro and macro-level reports, review outcomes to date, and provide attendees with a framework for establishing prospect ageing at their own institutions.

Change is the new normal. If you spend any amount of time as a leader in advancement, you’ll inevitably experience institutional leadership transition. Although it can feel disruptive, it’s not necessarily a time to panic – but it’s also too late to effectively prepare once it’s upon you. This session will explore issues and factors to consider as a senior leader in advancement to ensure that you and your team thrive as the torch passes above you. Managing the departure of one CEO and arrival of another requires understanding context, being intentional about your strategy, and thoughtfully articulating advancement’s value proposition. None of this can happen without deliberate planning, so start now.

The arrival of a new president, chancellor, or head of school represents a potential opportunity that is unparalleled in an institution’s evolution. Whether or not we can (or want to be) part of that next iteration depends heavily on the pre-work we’ve done with ourselves and our teams, striking the right balance of humility, and positioning to maximise a positive outcome, even if one can never be absolutely guaranteed.

CASE undertook a comprehensive assessment of our curriculum, and we developed a competencies model. To ensure that our educational programming provides a clear path to increased effectiveness, productivity, and professionalism, “competency clusters” were identified. Each competency cluster is composed of hard and soft skills, detailing the knowledge, skills, and abilities that result in positive performance outcomes.

Competency clusters for APAC: Emotional Intelligence, Global and Cultural Competence, Industry Expertise, Integrity and Professionalism, Leadership, Relationship Building, Strategic Thinking
