CASE has had eight presidents in 50 years. Each has added to the organization’s legacy in a unique way.

This is the second in our series of excerpts from CASE at 50: A Narrative History of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The CASE Graduate Trainee Program is designed to help early-career advancement professionals form relationships that build career foundations and unlock opportunities. Here, meet six individuals—both GTP participants and the advancement professionals who worked with them during the program—who experienced these relationships, which helped them thrive in their careers.

In November 2023, six team members from the Development Office at Karolinska Institute (KI) in Sweden embarked on a trip to the U.K. to seek inspiration from a broad range of nonprofit organisations and educational institutions.

CASE was founded in 1974, a year full of historic events around the world.

By 2007, CASE membership had grown to include advancement professionals in 54 countries—and there was growing momentum to shape programming in Asia-Pacific and beyond. Georgia Willmot (she/her) got her first taste of fundraising in 2021 during her studies for her Masters in Mathematics at the University of Surrey, when as a volunteer she supported local charities and student society campaigns. When applying for her first role out of university, Georgia considered how she could pursue that passion through a potential career path and came across the CASE Europe Graduate Trainee Programme. Georgia joined the 2022/23 cohort of the programme, gaining a placement at Cardiff University.

CASE has offices in Washington, D.C., London, Singapore, and Mexico City, and member institutions in 80 countries worldwide. Advancement professionals gather for CASE programs in cities from Seattle, Washington, U.S., to Cartegena, Colombia, to Riga, Latvia, to Melbourne, Australia. CASE’s international presence is at the core of its mission. Here are 50 years of milestones along our global journey.
